Edgar Allan Poe can be an American writer, poet, and a literary critic. He is best known for his capacity to produce excellent Gothic experiences. His way of focusing on how to envelop the viewers in a tense atmosphere filled with suspense generates from his capability in shaping an explicit Gothic ambiance within his tales. Best example would be his alternatively famous storyline "The Cask of Amontillado" where he uses objective and illusive symbolic elements to create a dark mood filled up with horror and impeding evil.
Poe's unique way of using objective elements expressing a specific mood creates vivid images representing the complete narration. To begin with, Poe models a perfect environmental environment for a story. In the beginning, the action is illustrated occurring in a frigid night, through the carnival season. The period of time itself creates a certain impression of growing darkness, and the use of carnival strengthens the impression as well: "It was about dusk, one night during the supreme madness of the carnival season, that we encountered my friend" (pg 124, pr 5). On this quote author stresses the supreme madness of the carnival, which may be collated with narrators madness. Furthermore, the following setting of the story also considerably affects the feeling. Catacomb symbolizes loss of life. It represents the area for burial, so when narrator leads Fortunato to the catacomb, the disposition of the story thickens with an evergrowing suspicion and nervousness. Moreover, the catacomb is filled with an intoxicating smell of nitre and ancient bones, skeletons, and other human remains. Each one of these objects are the key elements of the dark Gothic style: "At most remote end of the crypt there made an appearance another less spacious. Its surfaces have been lined with individuals remains, piled to the vault over head, in the fashion of the great catacombs of Paris" (pg. 126; pr. 68).
Although, the aesthetic objective elements are essential in creating a specific feeling, symbolic elements have a larger impact in sharpening the Gothic disposition through the storyplot. To begin with, narrator who is also the key character of the story by the name Montresor is an evil symbolic shape himself. In the very beginning of the storyline he introduces his manic side to the visitors. Montresor's insanity is the key in creating a dark ambiance from early on: "You who so well know the type of my heart, will not assume, however, that I gave utterance to a risk. At length I would be avenged; this is a point definitively settled - but the very definitiveness with which it was fixed precluded the thought of risk. " (pg. 123; pr. 1) Furthermore, Montresor's hidden sarcasm towards Fortunato is also worth attention: "I was so very happy to see him that I should do not have done wringing his side. I said to him /My dear Fortunato, you are fortunately met. How incredibly well you want to-day/" (pg. 124; pr. 4) On this quotation Montresor uses concealed derision to express his mockery by declaring the opposite as Fortunato wears a tight-fitting parti-stripped dress and the cap with bells, making him look absurd. Another part where suspense gets significantly heavy is where Montresor records about the lack of his workers. There Montresor unveils his serious motives of rewarding his revenge against Fortunato: "There were no attendants at home; that they had absconded to make merry in honor of the time. I had fashioned told them that I will not return before morning, and possessed given them explicit requests never to stir from the house. These purchases were sufficient, I well understood, to guarantee their immediate disappearance, everyone, as soon as my back again was transformed. " (pg. 125; pr. 24) Montresor's mystical plotting intensifies the building suspense, and the feeling becomes grave and much more suspicious. However, the most promising symbolic moment in time in the story is the part where Montresor and Fortunato are involved in talk about Montresor's family motto: "The Montresor's/ I replied, /were a great and numerous family. /I neglect your biceps and triceps. /A huge individuals feet d'or, in a field azure; the feet crushes a serpent rampant whose fangs are embedded in the heel. /And the motto?/Nemo me impune lacessit. /" (pg. 125, pr. 25) Although, Fortunato will not realize it, Montresor unveils his concealed anger and his oath to vengeance. Poe correctly darkens the atmosphere in this particular dialogue as Fortunato stays clueless after Montresor shows his double faced personality. When the story gets closer to the finish, the forthcoming danger gets increasingly more visible till Montresor finally traps Fortunato affecting the mood substantially: "An instant more and I had developed fettered him to the granite. In its surface were two iron staples, faraway from one another about two foot, horizontally. From one of the depended a brief chain. from the other a padlock. Throwing the links about his waist, it was but the work of a couple of seconds to secure it. He was too much astounded to resist. " (pg. 127; pr. 71) The strength of suspense and dread extends to the culmination before very previous paragraph where in fact the disposition finally becomes neutral.
Overall, mood is one of the main element elements at providing the storyline to the life span and allows the readers experience the story independently and Poe is successful in making a fitting atmosphere by using all the components of the Gothic style.
