Introduction

My name is Gavin le Roux and I am the Parts Manager at Hatfield VW Braamfontein. I have been used in my current company almost 6 years, been a Parts Administrator for days gone by 9 years and been in the Parts environment for over 13 years.

I have many goals and aspirations, both personal and in my department, a lot of that i have achieved and excelled at plus some which I am still working towards. Among my major goals is to become Dealer Principal, and for me personally to have the ability to peruse this and be successful in achieving this I will need to become more effective innovator.

So how do I become a more effective leader? Well first I to identify my Ideal Self which is the person I would ultimately prefer to be and invasion myself to be, and take the steps needed and actions to work at becoming see your face. Second would be to understand myself better by means of acknowledging who I presently am, my central values, causes of my behavior. Finally I would need to gather honest opinions from others concerning attain my current positive and negative behaviors. Lastly is always to populate a personal growth learning agenda to recognize key expansion areas.

1. Discovering my Ideal Self

As a Manager at my company I've eyesight to both expand my division and myself. In being able to be successful at this I need to identify my Ideal Personal, which is the individual which I ultimately desire to be.

I have spent time reflecting on where I currently am and what I've achieved within my company and where I'd to consider my department and myself to. In this process I've identified both strengths and weaknesses and have discovered key characteristics and attributes that i would require to master in having the ability to achieve in being my Ideal personal within my company. These characteristics and traits are as follows:

  • To be a powerful and successful leader
  • To be enthusiastic and also have a confident attitude
  • To support my team at all times and with all aspects
  • Have excellent Interpersonal skills
  • To be confident
  • To converse effectively with my team
  • Inspiring

Through these worth I believe I can expand both my team and myself and be able to take my team and division to the next level and also reach my own goals within the company which is to become Dealer Principal. I want to leave a legacy behind me in my company and be known as the leader that got his department from zero to hero. A innovator that set sturdy foundations, got great perspective and implemented ways of achieve his visions, a head who was impressive and continually contributed to the growth of his office.

Growth in my own department won't result from me by itself, but from me and my staff as a product. For me to be able to get my staffs support and buy in I first need to master myself and understand myself comprehensive before I could master others and be a successful innovator.

The next thing is achieving the required changes to myself in having the ability to get closer to being my Ideal Do it yourself is to apply Personal Mastery. Personal Mastery is the ability to see where I am as a person at present vs. the Ideal person I want to be, and also to continually work at improvement in being see your face.

As I've already determined my key features in being my Ideal self in my company, Personal Mastery will now assist me in my own journey towards ongoing improvement towards applying my desired attributes. It's about self-discipline and taking responsibility to implement the required changes.

"People with a high level of personal mastery are acutely alert to their ignorance, their incompetence, their growth areas. And they're deeply self-confident (Senge, 1990).

In addition to Personal Mastery, Emotional Intelligence (EI) is another tool which will assist me in my journey for you to get nearer to my ideal home as it'll assist me with the ability to deal effectively with my team.

Daniel Goleman details emotional intelligence as "managing emotions in order that they are expressed properly and effectively, permitting people to interact well toward their common goals. "

Emotional intellect is the capability to perceive emotions, to access and generate emotions to assist thought, to comprehend emotions and psychological knowledge, and to reflectively regulate thoughts to promote emotional and intellectual development (Mayer & Salovey, 1997) The capability to understand, interpret, and react to the thoughts of my personnel is a huge benefit for me personally in being truly a more effective head.

I am going to integrate my results from my Myers-Briggs Type signal (MBTI) Personality survey into EQ to demonstrate my stronger areas and areas I have to concentrate on in conditions of EQ. My MBTI results stated me as an ISFJ (Introversion, Sensing, Sensing, Judging) Personality.

My Strong areas in relation to EQ are:

  • I notice what needs to be done to help people, I am sympathetic, tactful, and supportive to others in need and I notice and do little things that help others feel great. Now taking a look at key components in EQ, Empathy is essential in understanding others emotions and being able to handle them in accordance to their psychological reactions.
  • I accept responsibility beyond the decision of responsibility and follow through until my work is completed. This relates back to a key element in EQ - Motivation, which is the love to help reasons beyond money or status and to peruse goal with energy and persistence.

My areas which I would need improvement on with regards to EQ are:

  • When I am in a crisis, I find it difficult to remain calm and made up. I find it hard to cover up my stress and worry until the situation is solved. EQ is very much indeed about self-awareness and self-regulation, I need to coach myself to be more in melody with my moods and feelings, to control them better and become able understand them and utilize them more effectively.
  • I am an Introvert and am hence reserved, quite, private. EQ requires Public Skill for the ability to manage connections and build sites.

Understanding Emotional Intellect will play a key role in helping me increase as a leader.

2. My Real Self

"Waking up to who you are requires letting go of who you picture you to ultimately be. (Alan W)

I've learnt we as people often conceal elements of our main personality behind a mask in an effort to cover-up our imperfections and insecurities. We've been brought up in a world where people around us are like mirrors, reflecting distorted images of who we are and these distorted images are actually of their own brokenness and pain. This regrettably submerges our true do it yourself beneath the surface. When we make an effort to show our trues self we have been quickly judged which pushes our true do it yourself even deeper under the surface and we replace it with a more acceptable self applied, a fake.

I'm going to use a few tools to offer a consider my Real-Self or on the other hand worded as my "True-Self.

First tool is the "My Ice-burg idea which is dependant on an iceberg floating in the ocean with part from it above the waterline and the others from it below the waterline. Above the waterline my mask, my cover-up to the earth and also my mindful brain. Below the waterline is my True self, which includes been suppressed as time passes by numerous factors, and this area is also my unconscious mind.

I have discovered myself as illustrated below:

I need to permit which lays below the drinking water line to surface also to face it head on to be able to unleash my true home.

"Our true self is here now now, but it's been pushed under the surface by the hands of the time and pain and dread

The second tool is Life Positions which is based on views and values about ourselves while others. A couple of 4 basic Life Positions and Franklyn Ernest (1971) created the diagram below to illustrate these positions:

Franklyn Ernst (1971)

After spending a while aiming to be brutally honest with myself in discovering where I am positioned in this grid, I found myself to be between two quadrants which are

"I am All right / You are All right and "I am Acceptable / You aren't OK.

So why between two quadrants? Well, I see myself as someone who is quite pleased with both myself as well as others, I feel quite definitely in charge of my very own life and don't rely on others to do this, I have high expectations and I don't always take a look at others as having lower specifications for themselves. In a nutshell I'm very much happy go blessed. Now, on the other hand I can even be find myself sometimes blaming others and wanting to be right and being organization. That is why I find myself to be between two quadrants, as I see mixed attributes in my Real Home from both "I am Fine / You are Alright and "I am Okay / You aren't OK.
