Elysha obriens story
The parents were reluctant to teach their mother tongue because of their demoralizing school experiences as a result of speaking Spanish (Norris, 2013). However, Elysha O’Brien’s regrets not having bilingual skills because whenever she is among her fellow Hispanics, they tend to assume that she speaks Spanish yet she is not familiar with the language. As a result, her main concern is to teach her children both Spanish and English. Therefore, O’Brien is in favor of bilingual skills transmission to her children because she does not want them to miss out on job opportunities as well as other privileges. Additionally, Elysha O’Brien argues that such bilingual skills will enable her children to build a strong relationship with their Hispanic grandparents.
