Most union fighters would claim to be fighting for release and freedom of slaves, while some claimed personal reasons like money and vengeance. There also were the patriotic soldiers who volunteered to fight for the north. Most of these soldiers if not all shared a common motivation for as to why they had to fight, and that was, to preserve their union. The soldiers were selfless to an extent that some were quoted saying that, “I count not my life dear unto me if only I can help that glorious cause along.” (McPherson, 34) They moreover believed in preservation of human rights and their believes and motives never wavered throughout the entire war.
