Greek and Christian in its essence and therefore what remains from that era of almost a thousand years in terms of cultural heritage are among other monuments Christian churches. By far the most famous and visited one is Hagia Sophia in Istanbul. Hagia Sophia today is the museum but throughout its history it has been a Greek Orthodox Church from the time of its erection in 537 by Emperor Justinian till the fall of Constantinople into Turkish hands. Afterwards the church was converted to be an Imperial mosque from 1453 until 1931 when it was secularized. The building is famous in particular for its massive dome and it is considered the crown jewel of Byzantine architecture. The site has been and still is the most visited tourist and cultural site in Turkey. According to Hurriyet one of the most influential Turkish daily papers Istanbul’s Hagia Sophia Museum remained Turkey’s most visited tourist attraction last year according to data released by the Culture and Tourism Ministry.
