Ideals of freedom in US

In a broader perspective, the ideals of freedom sought to ease the political and civil life of the citizenry by eliminating discrimination and repression, fair and equal treatment, provision of freedoms of speech, worship, press and religion (Miller and Rose 192), just to mention a few. The Emancipation Proclamation, on the other hand, sought to provide for freedoms to individuals enslaved within the rebellious states by declaring them as free. In context, the proclamations brought out the practical sense of freedom, as the country was on the fifth year of antagonized and bloody civil war. In an ideal show of respect and reflection of the “bigger picture” within the prospects of freedom, the proclamation pegged its relevance on United States’ military victory.

That is, in the essence of portraying the political good will of emancipation and provision for ideals of freedom, the proclamation provided for the inclusion or acceptance of “black men” into the union army and navy to help in the war of freedom. The Homestead Act of 1862 sought to improve on the issues of land possession and help solve encroachment in major towns. That is, in a bid to promote uniform habitation in a majority of unoccupied lands and the desire to extend agrarian revolution, the government had to legislate an Act to enhance habitation in unappropriated lands. Notably, the Act provided for allocation of 160 acres of public land to all heads of a family, citizens by birth or naturalization, with which the family could purchase the piece of land after six months of residency.

In a bid to encourage new settler to stay for longer, the government came up with a program with which the homesteaders had to pay an insignificant filing fee for the initial five years of occupancy and a possible $1. 25 per acre buying of the land from government (Canaday, Reback and Stowe 400). In context and guided by provisions in the constitution, the citizenry in the part of the South Carolina felt that the claim of the future held significance in advancing slavery against provisions in numerous Acts that sought to promote equity. Though the push for secession took a political and economic twist, with the southern claiming outright violation of slavery accord by the northern, the legacy associated with the move shaped South Carolina’s economic landscape in terms of tariffs and taxes (Whitfield 21).

To conclude, the United states has had tremendous milestones in the shaping od political and social landscape over the years with notable ones revolving around human rights and freedoms and the general striving for a just and equitable society. For instance, the declaration by South Carolinians though deviated from the provisions of ideals of freedom paved way for institutionalized independence across the States. In addition, claims to the future of the unified and just United States derives its significance in the paramount steps taken by president Abraham Lincoln in the desire to shape the America’s political and economic destiny.
