Mending Wall and Birches Analysis
Document Type:Coursework
Subject Area:Literature
"The wall" which is used throughout the poem uses an extended metaphor for the divisions that exist between the neighbor and the speaker. Also "another kind of out-door game" is a metaphor in the process of wall-mending. In the first line the speaker starts off by questioning saying "something there is that doesn't love a wall" where "something" suggests that the wall destroying culprits around are not humans only, but there are other things also (Frost, 1914). An example of a metaphor in this poem is "my life is a roller coaster" which compares the life of the speaker to a roller coaster with ups and downs. The predominant speaker's tones used in this poem are those of humor, irony, and questioning.
