They were equated to satanic things in which puritanism religion forbid. All the witches in the town and the surrounding areas were found and judged. Nineteen of them were sentenced to death with men beating tough punishments despite no evidence being availed. Any person who could not conform to the laws of the state was considered a threat (Miller). Hence, the acts were intolerable. The theme of religion played a role in the colonial society in the 18th century which has effects till date. The 18th century marked an end towards religious oppression. During the Salem period, strict religious observance was enacted in colony government and local towns. Religious freedom was absent especially with the dominance of the Puritan religion. Witchcraft hunt ended and was not considered a capital crime.
