Therefore, Marti used literature as a means to enhance his political activist against the Spanish colonial rule. In this paper, I will focus on elaborating on; Marti’s early life, his fight against the Spanish rule, his literary works hence depicting the entire legacy of this great Cuban hero. Jose Marti was born in Havana on 28 January 1853 hence being a son to Mariano Marti and Leonor Cabrera. Just like any other child during this era, Marti pursued the Cuban academic system which provided him with an opportunity to join Professional School for Painting and Sculpture of Havana in the year 1867 (LaRosa 805). During the start of the Ten Years’ War, Marti began to be a political activist in which he started publishing articles in a newspaper referred to as La Soberania Nacional.

His ideology in this poem also depicted a common identity in which he fought ethnic and racial discriminations. The use aphorism which depicted a great source of wisdom made his literature work popular and memorable. As an orator, he further used aphorism in writing speeches which are currently considered to be among the most influential political speeches. As a translator, Marti translated a couple of poems to English in which he wanted the whole world to join the fight against the oppression of the Spanish government. Therefore, he was a fluent speaker in; English, Italian, Classical Greek and Latin (Ripoll 17). It concludes that Marti was both a Literature Guru and a political activist who geared the attainment of independence in Cuba.
