Codices were also kept in the shelves apart from the scroll, but with time the codices replaced scroll as the preferred format of books due to the advantages it has over the manuscript making scroll to be abandoned by the people and people now started to use codex. It was named codex because it was covered with wood. Codex has many advantages over the scroll. The entire scroll might have to be unrolled to find the passage that one was in need of while with the codex, one would see the information immediately. In addition to that in the scroll, the writing was mainly on one side of the scroll while with codex the information was written on both sides of the leaf.
