The two dedicate themselves to each other and promise to be loyal. However, the union is as a result of the love that the partners have for each other. This love holds the two together until they sire children hence leading to the expansion of the family. The idea of love and marriage is depicted in Cisneros’s book “House on Mango Street. ” To understand the theme of love and marriage from the book, it is essential to look at the setting of the book. The theme of love is depicted by some of the characters within the book. Esperanza grows and begins to mature. It was at this time when she started thinking about men. She, however, tries to get rid of the thoughts, a thing that she did not achieve due to the environment that she was brought up.

The idea of marriage is depicted from the fact that Esperanza meets so many women in the society who are married to their children. Love also resulted in “shame” in the family when the aunts of Sally ran away from home for men. Minerva, Sally, Rafaela, and Minerva all had very successful marriages, which happened because of the love they had for their husbands. They all felt that their husbands empowered them. When they were raised, they saw the unity that existed between their parents, and this motivated them. However, Esperanza saw an ordinary love between the relationships of her parents. The family of Esperanza remains united despite living in a small house due to high levels of poverty. Esperanza had thought of running away from home to stay on her own because of the challenges that she faced at home.
