Claudio Monterveri's Song Vi Ricorda O Boschi OmbrosiName of the Student: Institutional Affiliation: Course: Subject Date: The act takes place at Thrace fields. A Sinfonia introduces it and then Orfeo and his companions exchange on how the day was joyous. Orfeo describes the pain he underwent before meeting Euridice through singing an aria that was separated by Ritornelli in four strophes. Silvia the messenger arrives; "Ahi caso acerbo" ("Ai! Bitter Fortune") are his opening words. Her entry is filled with impromptu musical change. This reflects the events that will take place thereafter. After exchanging with Orfeo and the shepherds Silvia starts with "In un fiorito prato"/"She in a flowery meadow") while singing an extended monologue. Silvia uses recitation to explain the unfolding of events during Euridice death vividly. Silvia repeats how Euridice’s invoked Orfeo’s name during her death when her story reaches the climax. When Silvia finalizes her narration by the phrase Sol per te bella Euridice (“But through you beautiful Eurydice”). Their speed slows suggesting that their energy has been exhausted at Mira deh mira Orfeo (“See oh see Orpheus”). However this version remains monadic just like most of the earlier versions. The dynamics get clearer with Sylvia’s entry making the song more lively and interesting. On the other hand Monteverdi’s bass brings about a semitone and Sylvia’s impromptu interruptions start at the highest level of her range and continue through the sharper dissonance and marked syncopation.
