Several building blocks of emotional intelligence can enhance employee performance. Motivation is one building block of emotional intelligence which the leader will use to improve employee performance and job satisfaction. Self-motivated leaders work towards their goals and ensure that the quality of work is improved. A motivated leader has the effect of motivating the employees because the leader sets the pace and the standard for the rest of the team to follow. Motivation within the organization has the effect of increasing output and job satisfaction (Szasz & Bailey, 229-240). Negative reinforcements encourage employees to perform better so that an adverse condition is eliminated from the workplace. An example of negative reinforcement will be allowing individual employees to listen to music using the earphones to help them reach a certain productivity level.

The use of the headsets will thus eliminate the undesirable noise from the employee’s environment by introducing another negative reinforce which is music to encourage productivity. Social skills are the skills required to influence employees’ emotions (Bowen, 4-13). For example, a leader may smile back at the military officers so that the employee may feel positive about their job. An effective team also practices effective communication (Cordery & Tian, 103-128). The team members in an effective group respect each another’s opinions and open to feedback. Team dynamics is how distinct roles played by each member of the team affect the behaviors by other members. A six-step strategy can be used to boost team dynamics. First, know the team characteristics, and then address the problems within the team quickly.

One way of motivating the employees is through reward. Team leaders; therefore, need to understand the power of an effective reward system and their role in influencing employee behavior. There are two types of reward systems that any organization can use to motivate its employees namely intrinsic and extrinsic system of reward (Bruno, 55-59). However, the most appropriate reward system for the military wing is the intrinsic reward system. An intrinsic reward system is the psychological reward system that an individual derives from a particular task accomplished. Individuals can also be given powers, ranks or status within their military. The leadership should encourage a fair promotion system to reward individuals for being part of the military department and not for a task performed.
