A Catholic reading of the letter to the Romans includes interpretation of some basic points. According to the Catholic Interpretation, Christians are forgiven and justified by faith alone. The Bible acknowledges sin as disobedience to the moral law. Everyone sins and the just sentence for sin is death, (Hahn et al. However, obedience to the moral law does not forgive sins. Works of the law such as animal sacrifices of the Mosaic Law does not forgive and save. Forgiveness through faith comes through the ministry of the church such as baptism and reconciliation. When one first believes, it does not instantaneously guarantee salvation. Salvation requires perseverance in faithful obedience. After baptism, grave sins destroy one’s justification before God, and it requires repentance and reconciliation to renew faith and justification.
