Causes of Tensions in South China Sea and Its Possible Solutions
The second reason which has escalated the pressure in the region is caused by the amount of wealth that exists within the region. It is estimated that, the region harbor close to 11 billion barrels of oil which have not been tapped, and natural gas of estimate levels 190 trillion cubic feet, which is an extreme source of wealth for a majority of the nations around the area (Kim, 2015, 119). The other major reason why tension has been increasing in the region is that of the territorial disputes, which have been existing in the area since the 1970s, which existed amongst China, Taiwan, and the Philippines, Vietnam, Brunei, Indonesia, as well as Malaysia ( Dicke & Holbig, 2014, 2). In the recent days, however, the actions by China have intensified the tension within the region, where, China has been seen increasing the number of Islands in the region, by creating new Islands, or even joining the already existent Islands, within the Spratly Islands and the South China Sea region (Chaudhury, 2018, Para 4).
