Document Preview:

Name Tutor Course Date Plato’s Critique of Art Plato emerged as one of the greatest Greek philosophical thinkers during his time and also gained massive popularity post-humus. His contribution and ideologies hold a central role in philosophy. In addition he also made a valuable contribution in other fields such as mathematics. In one of his philosophical works Plato derives a perception of art that conflicts the generally held belief on the subject. This controversial opinion is found in the second third and tenth book in The Republic (Nehamas 2013). The first and second books in ‘The Republic' focus mainly on a single piece of art poetry. The tenth book revisits poetry as a work of art and criticizes its role in the society in the context of the Republicans. The fundamental objective of this paper is to discuss the main arguments in Plato's critique of art. In his perspective art right path. In contrast the harm that can be occasioned by inappropriate works of art is immeasurable. In the final analysis Plato's perception of art is contradictory. He champions for selective use works of art to achieve the desired outcome. However his stand with regard is not absolutely clear as he appears to disregard the wholesome use and purpose of art. However critical evaluation of his arguments not only in 'The Republic' but also in other earlier works reveals his general criticism of art. The two fundamental arguments with regard to his criticism are the role of art as a powerful tool and art as an imitation. References Janaway Christopher.
