Russia was the largest country in the union. The union was formed mainly with the professed idea of providing everyone with social and economic rights. The union, however, collapsed in 1991 due to the reforms that were made under the leadership of Mikhail Gorbachev. The collapse of the Soviet Union had a lot of effects in the region and the entire world in the many ways. A wave of democracy collapsed in Eastern Europe. The European integration was deepened with the signing of Maastricht Treaty. The economy was raised to the European Union. The control of the nuclear weapons took a different turn due to the rise of the United States as the new superpower. The safeguards of suitcase nukes and bombs went into the hands of the unknown states.
