Name Instructor Course Date Themes and Literary devices In The lottery by Shirley Jackson the author uses the theme of tradition and family. The story shows an annual activity whereby people of that society participate despite the end results of the participation. The peoples’ commitment represents the extent to which individuals honor their traditions. The other theme is of family as the participants of the ongoing activity were supposed to come from the same household. The author uses irony as a device. Normally the winner of a lottery is awarded good things while in the story the winner is stoned to death (Jackson 1948). In The Story of An Hour by Kate Chopin the author uses the theme of captivity and freedom. In the story Mallard feels that her husband hinders her from being who she is therefore she is confined to as he feels that he is control of his life to an extent he calls himself the king of the Bingo game. The device used in this piece is symbolism as the spinning wheel represents the uncertainty of his life and destiny (Ellison 1944). Works cited Chopin Kate. The story of an hour.
