Shirley Jackson The Lottery Analysis

The primary theme for Jackon’s story is following tradition that brings out the concept of scapegoat, rituals, and mob psychology as the characters blame each other all in the name of survival for the fittest. Upholding tradition appears as the most important thing among the characters in the story. However, the author sees weaknesses as villagers have little understanding about its origin. In the story, Tessie Hutchinson happens to be the scapegoat in her hometown where The Lottery happens. Presumably, the depiction in the short story is strictly that the lottery refers to an event that takes place annually (Berne, Jennifer & Clark 680). In the story, Jackson insists that the notion that men and women in their various groups have accepted to abandon their personal responsibilities and acts with extensive cruelty against each other is totally wrong.
