Student’s name Professor’s name Course details Date of submission Paralympics research Summer Paralympic games Paralympics started as a movement initiated by Dr. Guttmann to give hope and self-worth to patients who had spinal cord injuries after the Second World War. Dr. Guttmann developed the idea while in Stoke Mandeville after he was appointed to be the director in the National Spinal Injuries Unit as a means of providing psychological care of soldiers and social servants who were injured during combat (Brittain 2). Through sports Guttmann wanted to enable the victims of war to have the opportunity to be useful in the society and could undertake numerous community activities and be able to complete in various sporting tasks. The first activities to be initiated included darts snooker skittles and punch-ball (Brittain 3). Later on Guttmann introduced archery which was introduced to provide the patients with immense muscle strength on the those with spinal injuries as well as Les Autres athlete category. This was a result of the increased participation by athletes from different countries and the increased attention made to the games. The winter Paralympic games involve different sports based on the nature of the disability of the athletes involved in the sports. These include alpine skiing sport cross-country skiing Nordic skiing ice sled racing and hockey. Also included are biathlon sport wheelchair curling and para-snowboarding which is commonly referred as adaptive snowboarding. Works cited Bailey Steve.
