How the role of advanced registered nurse transformed over time

The main factor which led to the development and establishment of Nurse practitioner roles in the 1960s was due to inability to access health care services (Joel, 2017). As a result of the human population’s health care needs globally have changed over time, so too there is need of transformation of the scope of nursing field. This has called for a change in education and training of nurses to ensure that they undertake more and complex responsibilities when offering health care needs to the patients. The growth and development of nursing area of specialization has been interesting and challenging journey from its earliest establishment. In the early 20th century, the nurse anesthetics and midwives were pioneers who placed the beginning for what is now recognized as advanced practice nursing.

As it is pictured in the Affordable Care Act, nurses have unique and valuable insights in delivering high-quality health care to patients as they contribute to improve the quality and safety health care with other healthcare practitioners (Grol et al, 2013). There is need of registered nurses to be more engaged with other health practitioners and undertake various roles in leadership in redesigning the ways of offering health care. In order to ensure that health care professionals are more prepared, there is need of professions to initiate proprietorship training for nurses, increase the knowledge of those nurses who attains a Nursing Bachelor’s degree to 80% by 2020 and also doubling the number of those nurses who pursue doctorates (Ellenbecker, 2010). In addition, institutional and regulatory obstacles which include various restrictions on the range of nurse’s practice should not be put in consideration.
