The immigrants made the arduous journey in search for jobs and opportunities. In the period from 1877 there was increased immigration of the Chinese settlers in the U.S. especially to the increased demand for workers to build the Pacific railroads that ran from Coast to Coast. Others came to look for work in the gold silver and coal mines. Owing to the difference of their lifestyles and cultures to those of the American society they were looked down upon (Sung 44). They were thusly considered as an inferior people. The Chinese immigrants underwent numerous challenges including racial discrimination despite their high expectation in the journey to America the “land of opportunity” (Twain 39). The Chinese immigration would impact on the U.S. economic political and social structure. There were Chinese immigrants from the late 19th century it is best if they are accorded fair treatment by all. Embracing diversity can help in bring prosperity and harmony in this country.
