The Matrix as Metaphysics

It is at this point that Chalmers delivers his argument urging the reader to the entertain the notion that even if it could be true that we lived in a matrix with our beliefs and senses there should be no room for a massive deception to our senses as it has been often portrayed.

This gets us back to philosopher’s original claim that “while knowing whether we’re in the matrix is a pertinent question; it is also the most unnecessary and irrelevant. A skeptical hypothesis like other good conspiracy theories is that which puts doubt over our beliefs and assumptions, therefore, making philosophers feel bad. The original skeptical hypothesis was from Rene Descartes (“what if our entire life was a dream?”). For instance, Stephen Wolfran has argued that scientific phenomena have resulted to simple programs execution in his book Right Kind Of Science. Another scientist Richard Feyman had toyed with the prospect that nature is not continuous but rather discrete.

Others have as well speculated that reality has been generated digitally. The last of the ideas that have been presented is called the mind-body hypothesis which states that the mind is an existence out of time and space whereas the body exists in the physical world of buildings and cars that are around us. This can be traced back to Rene Descartes’ argument that the body and mind are mainly separate entities. His argumentation is that our bodies are in existence and when one thinks that they are driving uptown they are actually doing exactly so. To him, this is because the bodies do exist in reality as the minds exist in another form of reality. Whatever we feel, touch and taste is considered as being real even though it is made up of bits.
