Week 6 Response

Make a positive response to post with at least 50 words per post. please number post. POST 1 Define: labor racketeering is labor corruption committed by, in alliance with, and under the control of organized crime groups. The crimes include extortion of company owners by threating unlawful strikes, work stoppages, and pickets and much more. (NCJRS 2003) Teamster came into power when Samuel Gompers, president of the AFL, arranged for a merge of the two groups. The union was marked by violence from the start of the group. (organized crime 2013) (pg.317) Jimmy Hoffa always stood up for his fellow coworkers against management and for this he was fired. He was then hired as an organizer for IBT. Hoffa battled management throughout Detroit. He also used organized crimes to shake down small business owners. In 1941, Hoffa found himself in a battle with CIO, during this time Hoffa turned to his underworld friends for help, this is when he was able to defeat CIO raiders. Hoffa’s road to power and presidency of IBT was strewn with scandals. (organized crime 2013) (pg. 318) Both loansharking and money laundering both deals with knowingly engaging in a financial transaction with the proceeds of some unlawful activity with intent of promoting unlawful activity. (organized crime 2013) (pg. 262, 361) Difference is that loansharks increase rates and use threats and violence in collecting debt. Money laundering usually involves legitimate business. (organized crime 2013) (pg. 262,316) The movie Deep Throat was the forefront in the golden age of porn. Organized crime’s interest in prostitution waned during prohibition because money could be made more easily. So they started looking for new ways to make money so crime organizations members may organize or finance or be involved in a commercial sex business. (organized crime 2013) (pg. 265,266) POST 2 Labor racketeering is labor corruption committed by, in alliance with, or under the auspices of organized crime groups. The types of crimes include extortion of employers by threatening unlawful strikes, work stoppages, picketing, and workplace sabotage; and soliciting and receiving bribes from employers in exchange for allowing the employer to ignore the terms of the collective bargaining agreement ( Jacobs, James B. 2003). The Teamsters union, founded in 1903, had 75,000 members in 1933. As a result of Hoffa's work with other union leaders to consolidate local union trucker groups into regional sections and then into one gigantic national body—work that Hoffa ultimately completed over a period of two decades—membership grew to 170,000 members by 1936. Three years later, there were 420,000; and the number grew steadily during World War II and through the post-war boom to top a million members by 1951. The Teamsters organized truck drivers and warehousemen, first throughout the Midwest, and then nationwide. Hoffa played a major role in the union's skillful use of quickie strikes", secondary boycotts, and other means of leveraging union strength at one company, to then move to organize workers, and finally to win contract demands at other companies. This process, which took several years from the early 1930s, eventually brought the Teamsters to a position of being one of the most powerful unions in the United States (Wikipedia), However, trucking unions in that era were heavily influenced, and in many cases controlled by, elements of organized crime. For Hoffa to unify and expand trucking union groups, he had to make accommodations and arrangements with many gangsters, beginning in the Detroit area. Organized crime influence on the IBT would expand as the union itself grew. Hoffa worked to defend the Teamsters unions from raids by other unions, including the CIO, and extended the Teamsters' influence in the Midwestern states, from the late 1930s to the late 1940s. Although he never actually worked as a truck driver, he became president of Local 299 in December 1946. He then rose to lead the combined group of Detroit-area locals shortly afterwards, and advanced to become head of the Michigan Teamsters groups sometime later. During this time, Hoffa obtained a deferment from military service in World War II, by successfully making a case for his union leadership skills being of more value to the nation, by keeping freight running smoothly to assist the war effort (Wikipedia). Loan Shark is a person who lends money in exchange for its repayment at a rate that exceeds the percentage approved by law and who uses intimidating methods or threats of force in order to obtain repayment. Money Laundering is the generic term used to describe the process by which criminals disguise the original ownership and control of the proceeds of criminal conduct by making such proceeds appear to have derived from a legitimate source. The processes by which criminally derived property may be laundered are extensive. Though criminal money may be successfully laundered without the assistance of the financial sector, the reality is that hundreds of billions of dollars of criminally derived money is laundered through financial institutions, annually. The nature of the services and products offered by the financial services industry (namely managing, controlling and possessing money and property belonging to others) means that it is vulnerable to abuse by money launderers (free dictionary). The connection between deep throat and the involvement of organized crime in the pornographic business was that Anthony “Big Tony” Peraino (May 10, 1915-October 18, 1996), a New York mobster, financed the movie. POST 3 James B. Jacob points out in his book that “labor racketeering is an important example of American exceptionalism.” By this he means that only in the United States organized crime has made a powerful influence in the labor unions (Jacob, 2006). Jacobs also defines labor racketeering as “the exploitation of unions and union power by organized crime,” and labor racketeers as “Cosa Nostra (mafia) bosses who wield influence over union officeholders and treasuries,” as well as “Cosa Nostra capos, soldiers, and associates.” The Teamster’s power came about in the 1930s and what made them so strong is that most of their records were destroyed, and most witnesses exercised their Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination (Stewart, 2011). Hoffa (President of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters) was made famous by his indictment and when questioned by Robert Kennedy gained total amnesia. Loan sharking vs money laundering A person that lends money in exchange for its repayment at an interest rate that is higher than the percentage approved by law and uses intimidating tactics or threats of force in order to abtain repayment is a loan shark. Loan sharking is the process. The difference is that when money laundering takes place this money (through criminal enterprises) is filtered through a seemingly legitimate business or bank. They are both illegal. The connection between deep throat and the involvement of organized crime in the pornographic business was that Anthony “Big Tony” Peraino (May 10, 1915-October 18, 1996), a New York mobster, financed the movie. POST 4 There are more prisoner joining prison gangs because they need protection. Race and tattoos became useful ways of identifying genuine comrades: no-one wants free-riders claiming to be a gang member to benefit from its protection while contributing nothing. Gangs, then, provide protection in prisons where officials often fail to do so. But bigger groups also enable prisoners to trade illicit substances such as drugs far more efficiently (Wikipedia). La Eme or the Mexican Mafia: (Blue)"Eme" is the Spanish name of the letter "M" and it is the 13th letter in the alphabet. The Mexican mafia is composed mostly of Hispanics, although some Caucasian members exist. The Mexican Mafia and the Aryan Brotherhood are allies and work together to control prostitution, drug running, weapons and "hits" or murders. Originally formed in the 1950s in California prisons by Hispanic prisoners from the southern part of that state, Eme has traditionally been composed of US-born or raised Hispanics and has retained ties to the Southern California-based "Sureños". During the 1970s and 1980s, Eme in California established the model of leveraging their power in prison to control and profit from criminal activity on the street (Wikipedia). Aryan Brotherhood: A white prison gang that originated in California's San Quentin Prison amongst White American prisoners in 1964. Their emblem, "the brand", consists of a shamrock and the number 666. Other identifiers include the initials "AB", Swastikas and the sigrune.[9] Perhaps out of their ideology and the necessity of establishing a presence among the more numerous Black and Hispanic gang members, the AB has a particular reputation for ruthlessness and violence. Since the 1990s, in part because of this reputation, the AB has been targeted heavily by state and federal authorities. Many key AB members have been moved to "supermax" control-unit prisons at both the federal and state level or are under federal indictment (Wikipedia). Most African-American prison gangs retain their street gang names and associations. These commonly include Rollin' sets (named after streets, i.e. Rollin' 30's, Rollin' 40's etc.) that can identify with either Blood or Crip affiliations. The Black Guerilla Family represents an exception, as an originally politically based group that has a significant presence in prisons and prison politics. It was founded in 1966 at San Quentin State Prison, California by former Black Panther member George L. Jackson. United Blood Nation: an African-American prison gang found on the east coast. They are rivals with the Netas and have ties with the Black Guerilla Family ( Wikipedia). The Black P. Stone Nation aka BPSN is a Chicago-based street gang estimated to have more than 30,000 members. The gang was originally formed in the late 1950s as the Blackstone Rangers. In later years, an Islamic faction of the gang emerged, naming themselves the "El Rukn tribe of the Moorish Science Temple of America" (or simply El Rukn, Arabic for “the foundation. The group's founder is Jeff Fort.Considered by law enforcement authorities to be Chicago's most powerful and sophisticated street gang the BPSN finances itself through a wide array of criminal activities and is part of the large Chicago gang alliance known as the People Nation. (1988 Chicago Magazine). Larry Hoover is an American gang leader and co–founder of the Chicago street gang called the Gangster Disciples. Hoover is currently serving six life sentences at the ADX Florence supermax prison in Florence, Colorado. His sentences include a 150–200 year sentence for a 1973 murder; and in 1997 after a 17–year investigation of conspiracy, extortion, money laundering, and running a continuing criminal enterprise for leading the gang from state prison, he received a life sentence (Kass ,2010).
