Reversing Sail: A History of the African Diaspora Student’s Name Course Title Date Reversing Sail: A History of the African Diaspora The term “Diaspora” was initially outlined and utilized to define the common encounter of the Jewish immigrants that were in exile as a result of displacement (Tulloch et al.2016). But it also relates to a consistent linkage as well as identification. Etymologically “Diaspora” originates from two Greek words “Dia” that means “Through” and “Speirein” that means “To Scatter or Sow.” The word is utilized more extensively to refer to the social and cultural connections sustained by a given community or a group of individuals who have been displaced and dispersed or who are migrating from one part of the world to the other due to social economic or political preferences. Unique “community” or “Diasporic Social Unit” is a conglomerate of multiple journeys to unique locations in different parts ever-changing life conditions and worked extensively to secure their families and friends as well as protecting their interests in the unfamiliar life challenges in which they found themselves. It becomes evident as the author examines the formation of another race in the second part of the book and how racism altered the position of former African slaves in the creation of the western civilization. As a text purposely authored for undergraduate students the book plays a critical role in which it offers a shared history and at the same raising queries that a particular class can evaluate and discuss in class.
