It is, therefore, critical that research, particularly wherever it involves children and adolescents, is conducted within the acceptable ethical guidelines. For this presentation, the two ethical considerations that will be applied are; securing parent’s permission, as well as the children’s consent, and disclosure of conflicts of interests. The Case: Sex differences and adolescents’ attitudes towards same-sex relations Pertaining to the provision for consent, it is essential that the child participants are fully informed about the research being conducted so that they can take part freely, and only with voluntary ‘informed consent. ’ Moreover, the children participants and the parents should be aware that they will not be impeded from withdrawing from ongoing research at any stage without adverse repercussions. Furthermore, the information should be clear and articulated in a language that is simple enough for the child to understand.

Conflicts of interest in research may take different forms including financial associations with sponsors or even pressure to attain certain academic credentials. In the end, the research project may fail to serve genuine interests of children. As such, parties with interests in the project that is as sensitive as perceptions of children on sexual matters should be disclosed in research projects that involve children, as well as an explanation as to why the benefits of the research to the community outweigh the risks (Robinson & Davies, 2014). Conclusion Research projects that involve persons under 18 years require stricter ethical considerations compared to projects with adult participants. Usually, the ethical concerns are even more pronounced when the subject of interest touches on children’s sexuality.
