Name Course College Date Psychoanalytic Criticism Interpretation on "I Stand Here Ironing" Psychoanalytic criticism usually adopts behavioral theories to interpret texts. It compares literary texts to dreams that put forward the secretive unconscious desires of an author. It regards a literary work as a manifestation of the neuroses of the author him/herself. While one can psychoanalyze individual characters in a literary work it is assumed that the character is a projection of the author’s psyche. The aim of psychoanalysis is to uncover the unresolved guilt’s emotions psychological conflicts ambivalences among others in a disunified literary work. In this analysis it is able to trace the author’s family life childhood traumas and sexual conflicts and other personal characteristics within the characters used by the author in the literary work. This material is however not straightforward as it is usually disguised and expressed indirectly through condensation symbolism and metaphors’ or through displacement. but rather showcases a woman’s hope that her young ones will face a better society than she had. The distinction between the child and her mother is a metaphor that exhibits the relationship between the author and her literally work where once an author’s work leaves his/her body it is modeled by forces beyond his/her control. In Olsen’s time female authors were limited by oppressive cultural forces. As such the ‘motherhood’ metaphor in the narration is an illustration how female experiences had been neglected by the literature of the time. Women were merely shunned. Therefore in this light this narration is not only a declaration of the narrator’s individuality but also for the author. Tillie Olsen herself. Works Cited Olsen Tillie. I stand here ironing.
