Chapter Five: Critique of the methods used Introduction In this chapter I will write about the methods that I used in this research. I took a mixed methods approach in this study (Yeasmin & Rahman 2012: 154). I want to understand what the sampled children already knew about the Numicon programme and its relation to the numbers system prior to commencing the study. In addition to that I wanted to assess their understanding of the research. I also sought to assess what the children knew at the end of the study. A Critique of Methods The study basically involved four weeks of intervention during which mathematics was taught to the pupils using the Numicon programme. I initially intended to rely on qualitative methods for the purposes of gathering data for the research.
