The backbone of Elizabeth Proctor’s strength to endure the challenges in her marriage is her morally upright personality. It is her belief in what is morally right and wrong that motivates her to stick to her husband and defend her marriage despite the challenges that she encounters. She even choses to lie about her husband having an affair in order to save his face. Her husband symbolize loyalty and anger. She was angry about her husband’s affair on one hand and chose to stick by his side. It symbolizes the shortcoming of her society. Elizabeth was opposed to witchcraft since she was a Christian woman. She said, “I am a good woman, I know it; and if you believe I may do only good work in the world, and yet be secretly bound to Satan, then I must tell you, sir, I do not believe it” (Miller,70).
