Why Caravaggio was so famous and recognizable
In all of his work, Caravaggio used an intense realism that helped bring personalities into his subject, plants, and life into his subject figures. His intense chiaroscuro and emphasis on co-extensive space are what made Caravaggio instantly recognizable. His figures and artistic work contained a huge contrast he often created in them by setting his figures against a dark background and lit by a single source, making the highlights to look brighter and shadows deeper, this made his figures look like actors on stage.
