In all of his work, Caravaggio used an intense realism that helped bring personalities into his subject, plants, and life into his subject figures. His intense chiaroscuro and emphasis on co-extensive space are what made Caravaggio instantly recognizable. His figures and artistic work contained a huge contrast he often created in them by setting his figures against a dark background and lit by a single source, making the highlights to look brighter and shadows deeper, this made his figures look like actors on stage. Significant characteristics of Caravaggio's paintings Caravaggio's style was not the unique feature about his paintings; his working methods were equally unconventional since he used different approaches to paint his figures, some of the characteristics of Caravaggio's paintings included; Use of high contrast based on the chiaroscuro, most of Caravaggio's he had an interesting way of playing with the effects of light in his paintings, and he created a dramatic contrast between an intensely dark and somber background leading to the creation of paintings that are submerged between very bright drapery and skin tones.
