Positive vs Negative mechanical ventilation

Document 1

The approach aims at improving or completely reversing respiratory insufficiencies and subsequently enabling the patient restore control over his/her own ventilator/oxygenation mechanisms. This paper presents various terminologies in relation to mechanical ventilation, as well as explaining the effects of positive pressure ventilation on oxygenation and ventilation (Lew, 2003). Ventilation effect of positive pressure; there is increase or decrease in work of breathing (WOB). The increase is attributed to ventilator circuit in which the circuit resistance tends to elevate as a result of decrease in endo-tracheal tube diameter. The ensuing secretions, tube patency besides bronchoconstrictions all tend to increase WOB (Muhlethaler & Malcolm, 2010). Dynamic compliance refers to lung compliance estimated by dividing tidal volume and the varying instantaneous transpulmonary pressure when airway flow is transiently zero.
