Order Description:

 Film Reactions: Film reactions are short essays that will be assessed on how well students are able to apply one of the theories of myth or viewpoints from a course text to the film itself. These assignments ask students to integrate critical thinking skills across two different media via clear, concise, argumentative writing. A film reaction is not a review or a summary, but should be an analysis and a reaction. It should discuss the issues raised by the film, address the film’s importance and purpose, state reactions to the content and quality of the film, and connect it to ideas and material presented in class. Film reactions will be between 600-900 words and will follow standard MLA format and language. A sample film reaction will be posted to Blackboard and discussed in class before the assignment is due. The film reactions should do the following, Describe the film in general terms. What mythical subjects and ideas does it cover? Describe the plot and setting. What issues does it raise? What do you see as the main purpose of the film? Evaluate the film for quality and interest. Comment on screenplay, acting, direction, production value, or music. What techniques does the film use, such as symbolism or foreshadowing? Relate the film to class discussion and readings. How does the film contradict or support ideas we have discussed in class? Identify an author and a reading we have done for class that you feel the film specifically reacts to. Summarize what you feel are the strengths or the weakness of the film 2 part To approach the first essay, first read pages 9-10 of the course syllabus, then read the sample film essay posted below this entry. (Keep in mind the sample below is from an environmental studies course - it is included to give you a sense of the structure of your essay. You, of course, will be writing about some issue having to do with this particular course.) This essay will be due at 5 PM, Friday, March 16th. You can turn it to Blackboard at any time before then. INFORMATION ABOUT THE OTHER ESSAY WILL COME LATER IN THE TERM. I've provided below a list of film options to choose from. Please note: There are more films provided here than there will be on the course schedule. You are not required to view all the films on this list for the course. You are only required to see the films listed on the schedule that we will screen and discuss in class. So, do not go out and watch all of these films for the course. I'm simply giving you more options for this particular assignment. All of these films are widely available for rental from a variety of streaming sites. Choose from one of these films to write about for your essay. The essay requires you to write on one film and one course reading. 1. Field of Dreams. Dir. Phil Alden Robinson.
