Ages 37 at the time of deliverance of the sermon, Jonathan Edwards focused on describing how sinners would burn in hellfire and brimstone in the hope that he would encourage them to convert from their sinful ways of life. Moreover, his greatest target audience was the members of the church who he sought to encourage to continue treading in the path of salvation and to encourage others to join them in this path to survive hellfire. This leaves the reads to think about the role of religion in the American society at the time and thus the central idea of this short analysis is to find out the role played by religion as explained in the text “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God” by Jonathan Edwards.
Religion played a great role in the early American society as some people used the principles and guidelines provided in the Bible to judge what was right or wrong. Corruption is identified as one of the greatest wrongs or sins within the text and that the sin of corruption is not excusable by God. Religion possessed a potential to shape the character and behavior of the members of the society through warning people of their actions, reprimanding bad or evil deeds and encouraging good actions by Christians and believers in the hope that at the end of it all, they will be rewarded by God as sinners would suffer severe consequences of their evilness despite numerous warnings from Bible teachings.
