Veblen's theory of conspicuous consumption argues that consumption patterns are dictated by individuals high in the hierarchy. Many aspects of the theory of consumption have been called into question. The theory is only applicable to luxury goods thus lacking generality. The current display of wealth by consumers is different compared to Veblen’s times. Wealth is no longer conspicuously displayed.
