However, changes take place in the man’s wife and due to alcoholism he is unable to take care of anything or anyone, other than Pluto. He later gets an illusion that the cat is no longer interested in him and cuts off one of its eyes. The next day, the man hangs the cat on a tree and later their house burns to ashes including everything that they owned. With nowhere else to go, the family move to another old house that has a huge basement where the man find another cat similar to Pluto with the only difference being a white patch on the chest. In this story, Pluto is labeled a witch by the man’s wife where she claims that it is a witch in the disguise of a cat. The whole house burns down, only for the man to find a wall remaining, embedded in it the image of the black cat. Mystery and suspense: This element is represented when a fire from an unknown source burns the man’s house burns after he hangs the cat on a tree. Suspense is created at the beginning of the story when the man states tha he will die the next day, which till the end of the story remains a suspense.
