I encourage students to seek my help if they run into problems. Recall that to start this work, one dependent variable—or topic variable—of interest that is the 2012 GSS datasets was chosen along with three independent variables from the very same 2012 GSS dataset. The core of the project is the literature review. The literature review teaches the reader about the topic, focusing on defensible suggestions of ways that explanatory (independent) concepts influence the topic (dependent) concept—Or why people take the attitudes they do or behave the ways they do. For example, if one were to choose to study why people oppose capital punishment, the review would give reasons to expect some people, but not others, to oppose capital punishment. One explanatory concept is race. There might be reasons to expect black persons to oppose capital punishment more than others. Hypotheses are the culmination of what the literature review suggests is the relationship between the independent variables and the dependent variable. Hypotheses frame the subsequent data analysis (in Project 2). That analysis is intended to test whether those hypotheses are in fact true. So one can say that the hypotheses are the cornerstone of the entire paper, consistent with what comes before them and framing what comes after them.In light of this, the point of the literature review is to present reasons for why the explanatory variables (independent variables) are expected to affect the topic variable (dependent variable). For example, when explaining what leads people to favor or oppose capital punishment, one’s library research may also show that people who grow up in the South learn to support severe punishment for misbehavior. Not much is more severe than capital punishment, so one may explain this fact about southerners and then suggest that southerners are more likely to favor capital punishment. After explaining the scientific evidence about the likely relationship, the following hypothesis may be written: “Persons who lived in the South at age 16 are more likely than others to favor capital punishment.” In this example region is the independent variable—measured with a question about where respondents were living at age 16—and attitude about capital punishment is the dependent variable.To meet these goals, library research on the topic is necessary. The search is to discover the likely link between each IV and the DV, write three corresponding hypotheses, and use the scientific evidence to build a case supporting each hypothesis. Of course, since this is academic research, the evidence can only come from appropriate social scientific books and journals. When doing the library research, students should look for research articles (from peer-reviewed journals) or books that provide insight into how the three independent variables might affect the dependent variable. Students should translate this information into a narrative—not parts of articles assembled together—that argues for a link between variables. The narrative should explain the ways that the three independent variables may influence the dependent variable. Please note that the literature review does not need to show proof of direct links between each IV and the DV; it only needs to give some reasons to believe in a particular link. However, if one has difficulty finding reasons in the literature to link an independent variable(s) to the dependent variable, replace that independent variable with another for which research can be found. While Project 1 builds the case for using statistics to test hypotheses, only in Project 2 will statistical tests be used. The work done here does not include any statistics.
