Curse and Blessing of the Ghetto by Jared Diamond Article Response
Document Type:Essay
Subject Area:Anthropology
In children, according to Diamond, this disease has neither no cure nor prevention. It is also a pre-programmed disorder and brings death before the age of four. The disease occurs all over the world but more than hundred times amongst the Ashkenazim. Several scientists have made theories to explain this phenomenon, but Diamond came with his research suggesting that it is due to the circumstances pertaining the environment the Jews were. They lived in a ghetto-like setup exposing them to Tuberculosis and hence natural selection paved way for resistance against TB by the heterozygotes genetics. Later, he, however, discovers that both of them are not Tay-Sachs gene carriers, but sadly, it is in the family lineage. Jared’s evidence and research are however speculative, but it is important to note that it will bring out new information that will help in curbing other diseases like Tay-Sachs.
