There are four main theoretical perspective namely: functionalist, conflict, and interactionist theoretical approaches (Thompson, Hickey, & Thompson, 2016). The theories help sociologist understand the society from different perspective and viewpoints. We shall evaluate the role of Television in the modern society through the lens of these theories. Functionalist perspectives considered a macroscopic view of the society with everyone in the society having specific purpose and duty in the society. This enhances social bonding and cohesion. Television media is used to propagate dominance ideas as well as manipulate the public opinion. Interactionist perspective views the social structure from a microscopic level in understanding the nature of the human interaction through use of communication symbols and language. Charles Horton Cooley and George Herbert Mead viewed the society structures to be defined by the symbolic interactions between human beings (LaRossa, & Reitzes, 2009).
