The Civil Rights Movements essay

These African-Americans were subjected to segregation, exploitation in the workplaces, daily humiliation, oppression, anger paroxysm and abuse through the use of vulgar language. Although this movement represents an era where the blacks were empowered, it was also depicting an era of insecurity marred by violence. In this paper, I will analyze the ways in which subjugated African-Americans stipulated for their rights and suggest the most effective way that was or is used to demand equal rights in the United States of America. The responses, arguments, and examples will be drawn from Chapter 17 of Howard Zinn’s A People's History of the United States book. The Civil rights movements majorly used protests and civil disobedience to demand the equality of the blacks and whites under the constitution of United States.

This prompted the driver to on a policeman who arrested and jailed Mrs. Parks. The news about arrest and detention of Mrs. Parks spread out in the city. The African-Americans whooped a rally and suggested to boycott all the city buses. Although these African-Americans sit-inners were harassed, mocked and physically injured they succeeded in their pursuit to end segregation as cafeterias were open to African-Americans in Greensboro and neighboring cities. iii. Violence This involves the use of force to achieve justice. Most African-Americans adopted this method to press for their constitutional rights especially in areas where slavery was still dominant. In the year 1963 in Birmingham, thousands of African-Americans took demonstrations to streets and the police countered these demos using police clubs, dogs, tear gas and powered water hoses (Zinn).

The police brutality was exposed by the press and the civil right movement gained protection from the federal government for the other marches. v. Civil Disobedience This protest method refers to refusal to obey the laws nonviolently. Civil rights movements employed different forms of civil disobedience to ensure their demands were effective. One example of such disobedience in the freedom rides. It was a peaceful approach that showed the strength of a unified and a committed society in bringing the change they desired. The African-Americans were mocked, provoked and abused during these sit-inn demos but they all remained calm and peaceful. Their agenda of removing segregation at lunch counters was achieved successfully. In conclusion, civil rights movements brought about positive changes in the way African-Americans were treated.
