For instance, trying to predict the outcome of certain decisions in order to understand what is to be considered an ethical decision. For one to have a better understanding of the ethical theories, it is essential to know what the decision maker’s idea of success is after achieving their goals. Some of these goals include the benefits the individual will get, justices, the least harm caused to the society, as well as respect for independence. In everyday life, individuals are approached by different situations, and people refer to different theories in their decision-making processes (Khalid, et al. Despite the fact that most people are not usually aware of the theory, which they live by, the differences in how we solve our dilemmas highlight the similarities between us and our ancestors in our moral reasoning.

The theory was first developed by Immanuel Kant and was based on one's sense of duty and on the capability to act the right way based on one’s beliefs. Immanuel Kant was a scholar and a scientist who had various books on history, morality and on science. Basing deontology on a personal sense of what has morally corrected incorrect, does not seem like the correct approach. This is because the majority in the society do not reason similarly. Notably, in Kant’s reasoning of deontology, the responses, outcomes, and actions are independent of each other. Furthermore, the advances in science had also prompted the man to give himself an idea of self-reliance. This details the line of reasoning behind the deontological theory (Shakil).

For a majority of people, ethical theories in reasoning should justify one’s actions in mediation between following orders and having conflicting interest with those orders. Therefore, providing a basis on why an individual chooses to fulfill a task. Further, this brings into effect the idea of normative ethics, which allows for a connection of elements working together. Besides, other scholars over time have also been keen to note the relationship between the use of Virtuous response and complementary duty. Furthermore, deontology has also been closely associated with utilitarianism also known as consequential reasoning because, for both theories, one’s character is the bedrock that justifies the moral conviction of the individual. However, they both exhaust the methods of ethical reasoning but fail to analyze and understand human virtue in ethical reasoning.
