Institution: Course:Instructor: Date: Reflection on Wheelchair Use and Experience Introduction Occupational therapy treatment is focused on assisting people with cognitive physical or sensory disability to become independent and satisfied in all possible areas of their live activities. In addition it practically empowers and facilitates people to recover and overcome barriers inhibiting them from accomplishing their activities as well as enhancing a sense of accomplishment and self-esteem. This report presents a reflection on typical performance and performance that is different after a 6-hour practical experience on a manual wheelchair “Quickie 2” in order to experience mobility accessibility and the real impact of being in a mobility device. In particular it reflects on my own reaction and others view of me taking my daily occupations on a mobility and accessibility along all routes. Alone in the wheelchair my self-awareness heightened the number of people staring at me was enough to tell me that my identity had changed in minutes. A group of friends approaching immediately part upon seeing me ahead and the lively conversation there before is replaced by mere silence and surprised faces in matter of seconds. Some of my friends who were laughing at my experiment made me feel miserable and only took it serious after seeing the much I was struggling to handle the wheelchair. Conclusion In summary a time spent on wheelchair physically mentally and emotionally changes our feelings and view of the disabled. Besides battling physical obstructions self-awareness intensifies and one is on his/her own. Staircases should be placed alongside ramps and pavements widened for universal accessibility and mobility of all. [...]
