Durkheim Theory Essay

According to the theory, an interruption in the order of things in the society usually results in the readjustment in the community to redefine stability. A good example is the establishment of jail systems that keep criminals who committed crime most probably due to insufficient education. To Durkheim, crime and deviant behaviors are ordinary and necessary within a society. Through these behaviors, people can establish the difference between wrong and right and create consequences for the immoral acts. In my view, Durkheim's suggestion that deviance has positive social functions is correct as deviance acts can push for changes within the society or increased suppression. Furthermore, the violent horror films may have contributed to his criminal activity of kidnapping. Indeed, this has a positive social function of making parents aware of the negativity involved in letting a young kid watching explicit pornography videos and porn videos.

Regrettably, Alegria's parents were aware of his interests in porn and even the growing appetite, but they did nothing about it. Furthermore, he also watched horror movies with his mother. Poor parenting from Alegria's parents contributes to his sexually deviant behavior. Undeniably it is essential for parents to practice proper parenting to avoid development of deviant behaviors among their children. Additionally, deviant acts can always lead to increased repressions and recreation of the instances to deal with the incidences. Kyle's life was a classic combination of sex and violence. Alegria was raped at the age of seven or eight years by a boy who happened to be elder than him. He later told his parents, but no measure was taken. In conclusion, Durkheim’s suggestion that deviance has positive social functions is indeed correct as it is evident in Alegria's life.
