These problems are on the rise, especially on the present day America, where most people are advocating for the legalization of marijuana hence easy access to college students. One does not have to be addicted to marijuana for it to affect their academic performance. Even occasional use of marijuana can lead to dropping out of college. However, students who use marijuana more frequently are more likely to drop out of school than those who use it less frequently. Time spent taking the drugs and recovering from its effects consumes a lot of study time, hence affecting the student’s academic scores afterwards. Students, therefore, spend a lot of time looking for money to be able to feed their marijuana addiction which is usually very expensive.

This is time that should be used for studies. This leads to very poor grades by the students. Addicted students have to be taken to rehabilitation centers to recover from the addiction (Bell & Johnston 19197). This means that they have to discontinue with their college education. This means that even though some students may manage to complete their college education but the effects of drug abuse will still catch up with them later, affecting their future success. It is important that students make wise decisions on the kind of activities they decide to engage in during their college years. Use of marijuana should be avoided as it has a very negative effect on their academic performance and, therefore, achieving of future success.
