Compare bartlebys withdrawal from life with that of the protagonist in a sorrowful woman

In the story of Bartleby the Scrivener by Herman Melville, the author represents the main character named Bartleby who is minimally deep and exciting. In comparison to the story of A Sorrowful Woman by Gail Godwin where the character is a nameless woman who has a similar psychological state as Bartleby who expresses her feeling of being dissatisfied in life. Both characters withdraw from society. Bartleby had a continuous downward slopping as he was withdrawing from life while the woman in a Sorrowful Woman had an as curvy situation when she was withdrawing from life comprises of highs and lows and ups and downs. When the withdraw was no more, it resulted in their death. “at the beginning, Bartleby did an extraordinary writing quantity” (Melville 107).

Bartleby begins to withdrawing from life when he was requested to perform a straightforward task of copying a document. Bartleby prefers not to do anything that involves him such as, venturing out of his comfort zone and socializing. Bartleby refuses to collaborate with other employees, and he is not willing to leave his little cubicle and interact with the world. The other Scriveners were responsible for completing the tasks that Bartleby was unable to do in a similar way to A Sorrowful woman where her husband and the nanny performed the completion of the responsibility of her mother. She enjoys the freedom for sometimes, but it was cut off when she requested her husband to fire the nanny. The next withdraw from life takes place when the woman decided to move from her bedroom to the nanny’s room.
