The Colonial Period Essay
Most of the slave were cheaply imported from the Caribbean region, and the African hereditary slave trade began in the seventieth century. In Virginia, where Pearline Smith was born, the African American slaves were considered indentured servants. To earn freedom, they had the option of converting to Christianity or gain work contracts. Pearline would have been born a slave trade, and her early childhood would have been spent in European houses and farms, learning the daily slavery chores. Being a loyal and obedient character, she would have developed into an adult woman working on her master’s farm without compensation or rewards. This was the irony of being a family member, yet a slave to the family. Despite her troubles as a slave, Pearline’s dreams would still be relevant in her imaginations.
