In this discussion I will explore the similarities of the two approaches as well as their differences and identify one preferable method for patient care. Briefly describe how cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and rational emotive behavioral therapy (REBT) are similar. The CBT and REBT share similarities in that they both focus and agree that each individual has social goals and purposes which differ from one person to another depending on their individual differences and cultural differences on how such are reared. The two approaches also share similarities in that individuals have the free will to chose how to respond to such differences. CBT and REBT also both utilize the behavioral interventions into changing how individuals react to situations in their life and that dysfunctional or self-destructive behaviors contribute to self-sabotage.

I would prefer to utilize the REBT in the treatment and care for the patients. The reason being that REBT seeks to address a more fundamental aspect of the patient’s dysfunction that addresses the patient’s view of the situation and not the situation alone. REBT has also been proven in studies to be effective in the management of vast psychopathology, conditions which provide evidence of the effectiveness of the method in patient management (David, Cotet, Matu, Mogoase & Stefan, 2017). In summary, choosing between the two methods in care can be difficult due to their similarities both in functionality, usage and their effectiveness. It is important to also put into consideration the patient individual needs, situations and characteristics to ensure the most effective method of care is chosen.
