According to research, close to 27% of the women with African background in their late thirties are unmarried, compared to approximately 9% of whites within the same age bracket. Therefore, most of the African Americans are single mothers and such families are always prone to increased levels of poverty. How they cope in the past and presently The African American families devised tactics on how to cope in the past and present because of continued pressure resulting from slavery. According to some of the myths, some of the African families avoided working and taught their children to rely on handouts. Further, some of the African American families do not face increased discrimination from the whites and rely on their generosity as well as other welfares from the government.

Its people within families, whether nuclear or extended integrate well by promoting respect amongst themselves. Parents show love to their children as well as giving them right morals regarding respect for the elder people in the society. Secondly, African American parents can adapt family responsibilities despite the continued external pressures that are as a result of slavery. Women work harder to make sure that they cook for their families as well as teaching their daughter's right morals as they prepare them as future wives. On the other hand, men struggle a lot to provide food and shelter for their families as well as acting as surrogate fathers. However, this native group is characterized by certain strengths that make it vocal among the other indigenous groups.

American Indians have a strong relational bonding that promotes core values such as generosity, respect, and art of assisting each other across the society. Children are supposed to respect their elders and listen to their advice. Further, it is the responsibility of everyone in the society to respect one another as well as upholding the right morals that promote social bonding and cohesion. The second strength is the promotion of harmony and balance in considering community welfare more than personal needs. Their parents teach them that their mothers and fathers play different roles and deserve maximum respect. On the other hand, both parents (mother and father) play different roles, such as providing for the family in case of male parent and taking care of the children for a female parent (Benokraitis, 2015).
