Human rights are fundamental in the life of a human being. They are important since they are necessary standards that allow people to live in dignity by guaranteeing equality, life, liberty and security. They also protect people from being abused by their governments or by the powerful people in the society. Additionally these rights ensure that humans can attain the basic needs like food, clothing, housing and education. The United Nations dictates that the human rights should be enjoyed by each and every human being. ”4This means that the human rights are universal and that they cater for everyone. However, some people claim that the universal human rights are not culturally relative but the Universal declaration is more western biased. According to O’conner, this is not the case since the human rights declaration was written by representatives from all over the world.

Moreover O’conner says that “the members of the drafting committee saw their task not as a simple ratification of Western convictions but as an attempt to delimit a range of moral universals from within their very different religious, political, ethnic, and philosophical backgrounds”5 Despite the numerous debates concerning human rights. Many countries have tried to uphold human rights all over the world and many people all over the world know their human rights. ”7 Despite the above challenges Human rights remain at the forefront of fighting for human dignity,equality and justice. Ensurring that there are stronger treaty monitoring will ensure that there are better human rights results. Governments should also be at the forefront of ensuring that citizens can enjoy their human rights.
