English Language - LITERACY NARRATIVE, Essay
Literacy Narrative. Instructions: Type an essay in which you explain one (or more) aspects of your relationship with reading, writing, or literacy in a broader sense (e.g. you will need to acquire automotive literacy and learn to closely read a car's symptoms and the driver's descriptions of them. You can write about school or non-school-based experiences, factors, people, and situations that influenced you negatively or positively.
Choose one or two factors and explain how these have shaped you as a reader, writer, student, or person. The experiences you discuss can be positive or negative, large or small, but they should connect to a larger point you're making about your relationship with reading, writing, and/or some type of literacy.
As you tell your story, be sure to connect it to a clear main point; it should go beyond simple storytelling to reflect on your experiences and the role they played or play in your use of language, relationship to reading/writing/learning, your confidence, identity, or possibly even your current path to greater education, experiences, and career success.
Other Details: For this paper, you may insert some of your own dialect or language (see the CCCCs Position Statement) into your text. (As this is a composition class, you must use standard academic English in addition to your own language, and your grammar & conventions in those areas will be graded accordingly.) Use Anzaldua's essay as a model if you'd like. This is purely optional. Your decision to use non-academic language should be purposeful, not an avoidance.
Helpful Hints (optional):
-Revisit your diagnostic essay to see if there is any writing you can use, revise, or add to for this essay. .
-Reread a literacy narrative that you particularly liked or connected with. Use its form as a model for your own writing. .
-Reread your discussion forum or rhetorical reading writing to help further shape your thoughts & ideas..
-Look into your major or field of study to see what type of reading and writing is required for jobs in field & you could choose to discuss this as a means of explaining the importance of a certain type of literacy for your future. .
-Think about topics or skills you literate & in other than reading, writing, and English. .
-Try integrating some quotes from this unit & assigned readings. Connect them to your own narrative by stating how your experiences are like or unlike a certain author experience or opinion, or borrow a term that you like, citing it of course. .
Format: approximately 700-900 words, double-spaced, times new roman, 12 point font. Title it something other than Literacy Narrative. Type your name, date, and class in the top left corner. Insert page numbers as a header in the top right hand corner. Upload it to the Literacy Narrative Assignment in Blackboard as a Word Document or a link to a Google Doc that allows me to edit or comment.
