Gender Role and Gender Identity Name Institution Professor Course Date Introduction Gender role development is the process where children learn attitudes behaviours interests motives and emotional reactions which their culture defines as the most appropriate for individuals of their sex. The biosocial theory of gender role development is one of the many theories that propose how the society should approach the subject. There is no ideal biological approach that relates to gender role development nevertheless there are three important factors. Males release testosterone hormone and females release the oestrogen hormone; Females have more progressive bone formation and central nervous system than men; and the Y chromosome in the males contains fewer genes then their X chromosome. These factors therefore influence the children’s gender development (Kaplan 2000). Behaviour theorists argue strengths while women are given softer duties owing to their less strength. Culture through the process of identifying peoples’ gender and assigning gender roles in society can create gender stereotypes (Chiu et al 2006). Culture can develop taboos in society and make people believe. For instance the American culture demands that brothers and sisters should not share a room after they have reached the age of puberty. This stereotype is generated by culture and holds throughout years. References Chiu S. W. Gervan S. Fairbrother C. Johnson L. L. Owen-Anderson A. F. H. Bradley S. J. & Zucker K. J. (2006).
